Hi Joanne
I haven't experience of this myself but it doesn't sound like you are ready for going back to work yet. What kind of job do you do?

Hey you will be the bionic woman for sure! do you set the alarms off in airports?!!!
I hope you dont mind me asking your age Joe? I am 35 and they tell me Im too young for replacements although the xrays say I need them.
I suppose if you are doing phased return at work and can sit and move about as necessary that should be alright. The thing I always inderestimate is the fatigue.
Get a lot of meals cooked ready and then you just have to warm it through. Or (better still) get the local parish to cook and bring it over.

Hi Joanne
I think you are doing really well to be able to walk for an hour with a 3 month year old knee. My surgeon said it takes up to a year to recover from a knee replacement, it may look good on the outside but inside there is alot of healing going on for ages after. Your new knee will let you know when you have done too much, hence the pain and swelling. An ice pack is a good first aid for a painful, swollen knee, as long as the wound is fully healed.
Best of luck with your other knee and hip ops. I had both my hips replaced aged 32 and both knees at 38. Yes I was told I was too young for knee operations but I basically said I was not going to spend the rest of my life in agony, in a wheelchair.
Best wishes Joe, hope you continue to make good progress

Joanne
I had my first knee replacement on 14th January (19 weeks on Friday) and am only just starting to go up and down the stairs one foot in front of the other. My knee continually swells. My scar is still bright red and my Consultant has said that the scar is used as an indication of how you are healing on the inside. If the scar has faded then you have healed on the inside. My RA is interefering considerably with my recovery. He also told me it will take at least 12 months for me to be anyway back to "normal".
I think you should definitely consider a phased return to work as you are not only recovering from a knee operation but also the anaesthetic. My surgeon was not happy for me to go back to work full time. Even now I am absolutely shattered working three days a week and my knee is almost double its size in an evening. Do not push yourself too quickly.
Good luck and take it easy.
Jackie xx

Hi its 2 years next week since i had my left knee replaced , it took a year for my knee replacement to start to feel normal , i can still get an achy pain from time to time but it was the best thing i did , i was 35 when i had it done , yes you do set off alarm at the airport but just explain and they have a hand held detector which they swipe over knee, my right knee and right hip have started now unfortunately ,

Hi Thanks for the replies, I am 46 yrs old Jenni-b and a retail manager. Went to see the consultant yesterday and what a shock, my knee is swelling because something has gone wrong, he sat looking at my x-ray for 10 minutes without speaking to me, he is going to get a 2nd opinion and I have to rest it for 6weeks, then re x-ray if the problem is still there then he says he will have to re-operate, the replacement is not sitting properly and it looks like there is a gap between the bottom section and my bone! he then said wait till hes got this sorted and hes going to do the other!!! don't think so xx Joe

Oh Joanne no?!? I really do hope you won't need further surgery on it. You have to post photos onto Photobucket first. You can then put them on here from there. If you don't have your own account, ther is (or was) an NRAS one you could probably use but I can't remember the password-somebody will I'm sure! YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Jo What an awful shock. I am so sorry that your operation may have gone wrong and this is what is causing the swelling. Let's hope that six week's rest sorts things out. I must admit, now that I have had my first knee replacement I am in no hurry to get the second done even though it is agony. Recovery is far slower than I was originally told by my Consultant. He did admit after the operation that he very rarely operates on people with RA and did not realise what a big impact it can have on recovery. Hopefully with his next patient he will be a little wiser. Take care and keep that knee up Jackie xx

Dear Joanne. So sorry you are having such bad luck. I can only say that I hope you get things sorted out properly as soon as possible.

Hi Joe
So sorry to hear this - it's devastating news for you. I am hoping and praying the second opinion is much more positive. Hopefully, things can be sorted without too drastic surgical intervention.
I'm afraid I'm one of the lucky ones who sailed through both knee replacements, but I can well imagine how I would have felt if things had gone wrong.
Take care, Joe, and please let us know how it all goes.
Love Jeanxxxxx

Hi everyone, hope you all are feeling well. I think I must have done some terrible deed in a previos life, had to visit my rheumatologist and it just gets worse, remember my last post, waiting 6 weeks to see if I need to have my knee replacement again ( was originally done 30/03/11), was told I also have fibromyalgia, things just get worse, anyone have this, I've never heard of this till yesterday. Joe x
